The problem we have in the world today, is that most people seem to live without the fear of God. Not to have fear of the most powerful being in the universe, seems like a very foolish way to go through life. There's a very important verse from the book of Proverbs that says, "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." So, what is it to fear the Lord? The truly wise will fear offending Him out of love. When we love someone, we go out of our way not to hurt or offend them. However, very few people possess that emotional love for God that we have for let's say, our children of our spouse. Fortunately, our Lord doesn't require us to have that warm, fuzzy feeling for Him. What did our Lord say? If you love me, keep my commandments. So don't be downcast if you long for that emotional love for God but simply don't possess it in your heart. Being faithful to the commandments of our Lord will show Him all the love in the world.
It's also true that many will try to keep on the straight and narrow out of fear of punishment. That's okay too. If love doesn't keep you from sinning, at least the fear of hell will! At the end of the day, what's truly important, is that you did what you had to do not to offend our Lord by sin.
So, what of the multitude of people who live life day after day without the realization of sin, or of the fear of God? Sadly, unless these poor souls open their hearts to God's grace, they will probably be lost for all eternity. The world is to blame for this horrible state that so many people are in. They choose to follow the world instead of the good pleasure of God. Our Lord told us very clearly that "Satan is the Prince of this world." If Satan is the Prince of the world, why would anyone choose to be a willing participant in it?
The world offers us empty passing pleasures. The devil is a master at this. He knows that with every little pleasure you indulge in, you're separating yourself from God. These things may seem very innocent in your eyes, but they essentially take your focus away from God. "Pray unceasingly ." Direct words from Jesus Himself . How do you interpret those words? He didn't mean squeeze a rosary in when Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead isn't on. He didn't mean say an Our Father in between Facebook posts. To "pray unceasingly," means to always have God on your mind, in your heart and at the center of all your intentions. Planting yourself in front of the TV, spending hours gaming, scrolling through the unending sea of posts on Facebook, watching video after video on Youtube, consistently texting with your friends, dancing in a club, drinking in a bar, never missing a moment of the game on TV, surfing the net for hours at a time, are many of the things we're doing that prevent us from even thinking about our Lord. Can you honestly say that when you're engaged in these or a hundred other things like them, that you're heart and mind are on God? Are you truly striving for ways to build your relationship with Him? Or can you go most of, if not all of your day with barely a thought of God?
You're listening to what the world is telling you to do, not God. How long do you think our Lord will continue to wait patiently before He raises His hand of justice against you? You must realize that the activities that the world has come up with to occupy your time, are what is keeping you from loving and serving God?
Whether we fear God out of love or fear of damnation, that fear will help us to grow in wisdom. We'll begin realize that true happiness is not found in the things of the world, but in the love and goodness of God and what He's offering us, eternal happiness with Him in Heaven. The world in not offering you happiness, it's offering you a brief moment of joy that passes more quickly than it comes. That's why we consistently seek out new things to try and fill that happiness void. The world promises Hell, not Heaven. In this life, following the world, that our Lord has already told us is under the control of Satan, will obviously not lead you to eternal salvation with God. The world is the path to Hell, and if you stay on that path, you may eventually reach that destination.
Peace, good and blessings.
